When I first started up Silent Hill 2, I kept the lights turned off. This state of affairs did not last long.
The first time I went 'oh, James is looking at this car; what's over there?' and wandered over and A MONSTER scuttled out from under the car, I physically jumped. I switched the lights on straight away and never played without them again. I was shaking.
The car monster was one of the scariest moments I've ever encountered in a videogame, and I think the reason it was so effective is the way it clashed with my expectations. I expect monsters in Silent Hill, of course! But I'd come to expect 'James is looking at something, and there's no radio static; it must be a useful item!' and I wasn't prepared to have that expectation betrayed.
Whatever's waiting at the end of this trail, I have a feeling it might be worse. Are you sure you want to keep going? You might not like what you find.
